SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) defines Recovery as:

A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.

FAVOR Grand Strand believes this includes the curtailment of substances and behaviors that have a detrimental effect on one’s life. These may result in the inability to participate in or function with work, school, family, or society as a whole. When such behaviors make a happy and productive life impossible, there is a serious problem and that is where we come in. Our goal is to help the substance user recognize the problem and become willing to address it. We believe that Recovery is a process that requires ongoing support for years. Just as a cancer patient receives care for up to five years to attempt to keep their cancer in remission, we believe that the Recovery Coach (RC) to Recoveree relationship should continue for at least 1 to 2 years, and maybe even up to five years. This is to assure that the disease remains in remission and to recognize any recurrence or return to use immediately, so it can be addressed as quickly as possible and recovery restored. The long term goal of Recovery is to return to a happy and productive life. Too many people have come to believe that these goals are no longer a possibility. Recovery is regaining the belief in one’s self and that “you can do it!”

Recovery Coaches are persons in recovery (generally for at least 2 years) or family members in recovery who have received special training to assist the Recoveree in identifying strengths and weakness, develop strategies to address these, and resume ones rightful place in society. For more information on Recovery Coaches, see the article on recovery coaches.

Support FAVOR Grand Strand and help us reclaim lives.
